Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook CEO pledges new privacy control

Latest Tech News!!!

Contrite Facebook CEO promises new privacy controls

source:http://news.yahoo.com/

Buffeted by privacy snafus and the lingering fallout from a damning, years-old instant messaging thread, Facebook chief exec Mark Zuckerberg switched into full-on damage control Monday, confessing that the sprawling social network had "missed the mark" when it comes to its complex privacy controls — and pledging to do better.
In an open letter published Monday in the Washington Post (whose chairman, Donald E. Graham, just so happens to sit on Facebook's board of directors), Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook has been "growing quickly" and admitted that "sometimes we move too fast."

"Many of you thought our controls were too complex," Zuckerberg's letter reads. "Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls" — uh, you can say that again — "but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark."

Zuckerberg promised, in "coming weeks," privacy controls that will be "much simpler to use" — including an "easy way to turn off all third-party services" that can access your account.

Microsoft's Docs for Facebook unveiled

Watch out, Google: There's a new Doc in town.

Docs.com, also known as Docs for Facebook, officially launched at Facebook's F8 conference on Wednesday. Created by Microsoft's FUSE Labs, the online app allows you to create, edit, and share Microsoft Office documents with your Facebook friends.

As of now, the service is still in beta; anyone can view documents, but in order to edit or create new ones, you'll have to join a wait list. I was able to take an early peek at the full functionality, though. Here's a look at what I found.

McAfee Antivirus Update causes Windows XP to crash

McAfee Antivirus update is said to be the caused of computer break down particularly those Windows XP PC. The news was reported last Wednesday and is now spreading all over the net.

It was reported that thousands of computer running Windows XP crashes or repeatedly rebooting after McAfee security update was installed.

According to the report also that the security update from the anti-virus software vendor had wrongly labeled part of the Windows OS as a virus, which resulted in Windows XP device chaos.

The McAfee 5958 update mistakenly identified the Windows svchost.exe file as a worm that sought to replace an existing svchost file with its own version in order to take over a machine

Windows XP machines operating service pack 3 were the hardest hit by the malfunction.

Apple Unveiled Iphone OS 4

Recently, Apple Company has brought to the market their latest gadget known as the iPad. This time around they revealed another great innovation of their popular smart phone the iPhone OS 4.

Iphone OS 4 was unveiled last April 8, 2010. Apple said it is the biggest and most exciting software update yet. iPhone OS 4 will include over 100 new user features for iPhone and iPod touch owners to enjoy. And for developers, a new software development kit (SDK) offers over 1500 new APIs to create apps that are even more powerful, innovative, and amazing.

iPhone OS 4 will ship this summer for iPhone and iPod touch, and for iPad in the fall. A developer beta is available now.

With iPhone OS 4, iPhone owners will enjoy over 100 new features that make it easier to interact with apps, manage email, read books, and more. New features include the following:

Multitasking
Developers will have access to seven multitasking services, which will allow tasks to be performed in the background while preserving performance and battery life. So you’ll be able to make a Voice over IP call while playing a game or checking email, find a restaurant on Urbanspoon while  listening to Pandora, and more.

Facebook Unseats Google as Most-Visited Site

This is very awesome on the part of Facebook making a new record as the most visited sites.

Social network beat search engine in the U.S., according to Hitwise

Although the "thud" wasn't verified until this afternoon, it seems that an online giant fell a couple of days ago. According to new data from Hitwise, Facebook managed to beat Google in terms of visits between March 7th and March 13th, becoming the most visited website in the U.S. for the week.

Firefox 3.5.8 Closes Security Holes

Latest news about Mozilla
Source:Yahoo!News
Erik Larkin – Thu Feb 18, 1:45 pm ET

Mozilla yesterday released updates for its Firefox Web browser to shore up vulnerabilities in the 3.5.x and 3.0.x browser versions.

Three critical flaws (MSFA 2010-01, 2010-02 and 2010-03) all involve memory-related errors that could potentially allow an attacker to run any command on a victim PC. According to the advisories, the holes are already fixed in the recently released Firefox 3.6.

The patches also fix two other flaws that could lead to cross-site scripting attacks, but are only rated moderate (MSFA 2010-04 and 2010-05).

The updates are available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and will bump up the browser versions to 3.5.8 or 3.0.18. If you haven't already seen the automatic update pop-up, head to Help | Check for Updates to get the patch.

See More Windows Phone 7 ScreenShots

BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 15, 2010 — Today at Mobile World Congress 2010, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the next generation of Windows® Phones, Windows Phone 7 Series. With this new platform, Microsoft offers a fresh approach to phone software, distinguished by smart design and truly integrated experiences that bring to the surface the content people care about from the Web and applications. For the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience on a mobile phone, exclusively on Windows Phone 7 Series. Partners have already started building phones; customers will be able to purchase the first phones in stores by holiday 2010.

“Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.”

Windows Phone 7 Series includes six hubs built on specific themes reflecting activities that matter most to people:

People. This hub delivers an engaging social experience by bringing together relevant content based on the person, including his or her live feeds from social networks and photos. It also provides a central place from which to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live in one step.

Pictures. This hub makes it easy to share pictures and video to a social network in one step. Windows Phone 7 Series also brings together a user’s photos by integrating with the Web and PC, making the phone the ideal place to view a person’s entire picture and video collection.

Games. This hub delivers the first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile. With more than 23 million active members around the world, Xbox LIVE unlocks a world of friends, games and entertainment on Xbox 360, and now also on Windows Phone 7 Series.

Music + Video. This hub creates an incredible media experience that brings the best of Zune, including content from a user’s PC, online music services and even a built-in FM radio into one simple place that is all about music and video. Users can turn their media experience into a social one with Zune Social on a PC and share their media recommendations with like-minded music lovers. The playback experience is rich and easy to navigate, and immerses the listener in the content.

Marketplace. This hub allows the user to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games.

Office. This hub brings the familiar experience of the world’s leading productivity software to the Windows Phone. With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents. With the additional power of Outlook Mobile, users stay productive and up to date while on the go.

Availability

Partners from around the world have committed to include Windows Phone 7 Series in their portfolio plans. They include mobile operators AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and manufacturers Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp., HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm Inc. The first phones will be available by holiday 2010. Customers who would like to receive additional information about Windows Phone 7 Series and be notified when it is available can register at http://www.windowsphone7series.com

The home screen, or Start, on Windows® Phone 7 Series can be customized with “live tiles” that show the latest updates from the Web directly to customers. For example, create a “live tile” of a friend and gain a readable, up-to-date view of that person’s latest pictures and posts, just by glancing at Start.

The Windows® Phone 7 Series Office Hub provides fast access to Microsoft Office Mobile, Microsoft Office SharePoint and Microsoft Office OneNote on the same phone that offers Microsoft Office Outlook e-mail.

Google Phone vs. iPhone

Google Phone vs. iPhone: Head to Head
Original Article by Diana Ransom and SmartMoney.com

Will the company that revolutionized Internet search send the Apple (AAPL) iPhone looking for answers?

At a press gathering on Tuesday, Google (GOOG) unveiled the Nexus One, a Google-branded smartphone that will run on the search giant's Android operating system. Some analysts say Google's new device, which is being built by HTC of Taiwan based on Google's specifications, will deal a stiff blow to Apple's hegemony in the smartphone arena.

Where could Google succeed where other competitors have failed? The Nexus One boasts speed improvements and enhanced camera capabilities, and the device will be sold unlocked. So rather than being forced to sign a contract with AT&T (T), a service provider that has been criticized for network mishaps and poor customer service ratings in the last year, buyers may purchase service plans separately from the device.

The Nexus One is also nice to look at, says Michael Gartenberg, the vice president of strategy and analysis for Interpret, a market researcher in Los Angeles. "Google's Nexus One is a beautifully designed device," he says. "It looks like Google looked at the iPhone and said we can do better."
For now, the iPhone is the dominant device in the sector. And critics of Google's device say the company's design improvements offer only slight advantages over existing devices and won't necessarily shake iPhone from its perch yet.
SmartMoney took a closer look at how Apple's iPhone and Google's new Nexus One match up:

Price

The unlocked version of the Nexus One, which will be sold directly to consumers via a new web store hosted by Google, will cost $529. A locked version of the phone, which will be sold initially by T-Mobile, will cost $179 with a two-year contract that will cost roughly $80 a month.
Apple's iPhone 3GS now costs $199 with a two-year contract with AT&T.

Advantage: Nexus One
